KUANTAN: Team Sabah created history at the 54th Mr Malaysia Championship after clinching fourth place overall – the state’s best-ever performance at the prestigious national bodybuilding tournament.
The Sabah Bodybuilding Association (SBBA) contingent delivered an outstanding medal haul of eight – three gold, three silver and two bronze – during the competition held in Kuantan, Pahang, from 25 to 29 September.
Gold medals went to Mohd Hakimi bin Abdullah in the Masters Under 70kg, Affan Affandy Sazali in the Men’s Sport Physique Over 170cm, and Martin Magalai in the Flyweight Over 60kg. The silver medallists were Mohammad Asraf Hamza in the Men’s Sport Physique Under 170cm, Tony Meldan Masabal in the Light Flyweight Over 55kg, and Allen Carlson Aloysious Sern in the Middleweight 85kg. Meanwhile, Wandy bin Anjum (Over 65kg) and Grace Voo (Light Heavyweight 90kg) secured bronze.
SBBA President Clarence Runggi hailed the achievement, noting that the team had surpassed their initial two-gold target.
“For the first time in our history, Sabah has secured fourth place overall. This is our best-ever performance on the Mr Malaysia stage and proof that Sabah is now a force to be reckoned with in the national bodybuilding arena,” he said.
He also extended gratitude to the athletes, coaches, officials, the Sabah Sports Council and the Sabah Ministry of Youth and Sports for their continuous support.
Recognised as Malaysia’s most prestigious bodybuilding platform, the Mr Malaysia Championship brings together the nation’s finest competitors.
SBBA is confident the success will inspire greater development of bodybuilding in Sabah and nurture more champions in the years to come.
