SANDAKAN: The annual Sandakan Pastry Competition recently concluded successfully, with contestant Nurul Syamimi Ramsah winning over the judges with her distinctive creation, the "Teh Sang Suk Nai Chiffon Cake". She was awarded first place and a cash prize of RM500.
The Sandakan Pastry Competition was first introduced two years ago in conjunction with the "Sandakan UFO Tart Day" held annually on 5th May. The event aims to encourage participants to craft a Sandakan-style pastry that can rival the popularity of the iconic UFO Tart.
According to the organiser from San Da Gen Kopitiam, this competition celebrates the rich and unique Malaysian and Sabahan culinary heritage. It also provides an opportunity to inspire the creation of new, distinctive pastry delights that could, like the UFO Tart, become favourites enjoyed for generations to come.
The panel of judges remarked that the winning entry, the Teh Sang Suk Nai Chiffon Cake—frosted with caramelised condensed milk cream, decorated with dots of evaporated milk custard, and topped with banana chips tuile—stood out clearly among all the entries.
The organisers expressed their hope that next year’s Sandakan Pastry Competition will be even more successful, attracting more talented bakers and pastry chefs, and becoming a highlight in Sandakan’s vibrant culinary scene.
Winners of the 2025 Sandakan Creative Pastry Competition:
- First Prize: Nurul Syamimi Ramsah
