PENAMPANG: Roy Ajun, the founder and owner of Siboguan Kitchen and Catering, embarked on his culinary journey in 2006, initially focusing on crafting patties and creating delicious burgers.

However, his primary business revolved around catering, with a unique beginning as a provider for funeral homes.

“I supplied food for these establishments. Often, the families of the deceased prefer not to cook during such difficult times, so I stepped in to provide meals. According to our cultural practices, food is traditionally served for seven days following a death, again on the 40th day, and then on the 100th day. I cater for these occasions,” Roy explained.

As word of his services spread, Roy began receiving requests for catering at weddings, engagements, birthdays, and other celebrations.

“I embraced these opportunities, and I can confidently say that it turned into a thriving business,” he added.

However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic brought significant challenges.

“I was severely impacted; catering was no longer feasible due to the Movement Control Order (MCO). In response, I pivoted to food delivery services. While it proved to be a viable alternative, the income was not enough. And I faced the added challenge of obtaining police letters of consent to operate during that time,” Roy recounted.

Once the pandemic restrictions eased, Roy returned to his business establishment located in the Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) vicinity. Just as he was beginning to recover, disaster struck again when floods hit Penampang earlier this year.

“I suffered substantial losses, including essential equipment like my oven and freezer. It feels like I had to start from scratch,” he lamented.

In light of these setbacks, Roy applied for and received a loan of RM20,000 from TEKUN, which he expressed gratitude for, despite it being insufficient to cover all his needs. He was absolutely thankful as the loan came so fast.

“I am thankful for the support, although it cannot fully cover what I need to replace, such as the kitchen equipment and other paraphernalia I lost in the flood,” he said.

He also encouraged entrepreneurs who are struggling to revive their businesses to reach out to TEKUN for guidance and support.

"TEKUN offers valuable resources and advice that can help you navigate challenges and find solutions," he emphasised adding that they should not hesitate to seek TEKUN assistance.

Roy Ajun’s resilience and adaptability in adversity highlight his commitment to his culinary business and the community he serves.
