KUALA LUMPUR: U Mobile and Huawei Malaysia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaboratively drive digital innovation, develop advanced technologies, and foster a sustainable innovation ecosystem.

Focusing on 5G-Advanced (5G-A), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and emerging tech, the partnership aims to accelerate Malaysia’s digital economy and strengthen U Mobile’s 5G leadership.

The collaboration includes a pioneering 5G 3.5GHz dual-carrier trial to optimise spectrum use, demonstrate 5G-A features like carrier aggregation, and inform future spectrum policy.

Additionally, the partners will co-create immersive 5G-enabled gaming experiences using network slicing to improve latency, stability, and overall quality.

A key focus is integrating AI into U Mobile’s network operations to evolve towards an autonomous, intelligent network, moving from reactive maintenance to proactive, automated management.

This transformation aims to reduce operational costs, simplify network complexity, and deliver more reliable, consistent ULTRA5G experiences for customers.

Woon Ooi Yuen, Chief Technology Officer of U Mobile, stated, “This MoU aligns with our digital transformation ambitions. We’re exploring 5G-A and AI innovations, including a 3.5GHz spectrum trial and enhanced gaming through network slicing, to deliver superior experiences. Our goal is to develop an Autonomous Network Level 4, shifting to automated management for better reliability and efficiency.”

Zac Chow, Deputy CEO of Huawei Malaysia, added, “This partnership unlocks spectrum efficiency and enhances user experience. Together, we’re deploying 5G-A and AI solutions to deliver next-generation services, automate operations, and build local expertise, driving Malaysia’s digital future.”

In December 2025, U Mobile and Huawei made a global breakthrough by demonstrating 5G-A’s capacity to support high-demand broadband in dense urban areas, using Single-User-8-Layer technology.

Operating in Kuala Lumpur’s residential towers, the trial achieved peak speeds of 3.2Gbps with only 100MHz of spectrum—marking the fastest speed for this configuration on a commercial network, powered by the world’s first 5G-compatible Single-User-8-Layer CPE.

The MoU was signed at Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona by Woon Ooi Yuen and Zac Chow, witnessed by senior representatives from both organisations, signalling a bold step forward in Malaysia’s digital evolution.
