KOTA KINABALU: The Centre for Languages and Generic Development (CLGD) at University College Sabah Foundation (UCSF Sabah) ended 2025 on a high note with the successful implementation of a series of impactful community service initiatives, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to social responsibility and holistic student development.
Throughout the year, 14 community service projects were carried out across Sabah, engaging more than 350 students. These initiatives enabled students to work closely with local communities while making meaningful contributions to social, educational and environmental causes.
The projects addressed a wide range of community needs, including support for orphaned children and asnaf communities, environmental conservation efforts, educational and language enrichment programmes, creative school improvement initiatives and public awareness campaigns.
Activities took place at welfare homes, schools, conservation sites, kindergartens and public institutions, offering students valuable opportunities to apply communication, teamwork and leadership skills in real-world settings.
UCSF Sabah currently has an enrolment of more than 1,000 students across four faculties: the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Sustainability, the Faculty of Development and Media Studies, the Faculty of Arts and Creative Media, and the Faculty of Management and Entrepreneurship. Students from all faculties actively participated in the programmes, reflecting a strong, university-wide culture of civic engagement and service learning.
Commending the collective effort, Vice-Chancellor Datuk Dr Rafiq Idris underscored the importance of community engagement in higher education.
“Community service is a cornerstone of holistic education at UCSF Sabah. These initiatives play a vital role in shaping graduates who are socially responsible, compassionate and mindful of their role in nation-building,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Head of the Centre for Languages and Generic Development, William Bunyau, highlighted the educational impact of the initiatives.
“These programmes provide students with meaningful opportunities to engage with society while developing essential soft skills that will continue to benefit them long after their academic journey,” he noted.
Through the sustained efforts of CLGD, UCSF Sabah’s community service initiatives have strengthened the institution’s ties with the wider community, while reinforcing its mission to produce well-rounded, socially conscious graduates capable of making a positive impact on society.
