KOTA KINABALU: The Science Technology and Innovation Centre at the University College Sabah Foundation (UCSF) will be open to its students and secondary school students starting in August 2024.
The opening of this centre is based on research conducted by the Centre for Development Studies (CDS) at UCSF, which found that students' interest in education related to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) has been declining.
Among the interesting offerings at the science center are Robotics, Coding, 3D Printing, Virtual Reality, and STEM.
Two officers entrusted with overseeing the centre, Elly Mazlin and Aisyah, stated that the response from UCSF students has been quite encouraging.
"In recent weeks, the response from outside visitors has also been quite positive," they said.
UCSF Vice-Chancellor Dr. Rafiq Idris mentioned that the centre aims to provide education and awareness, as well as attract students' interest in STEM subjects.
He stated that the centre is not only open for the benefit of UCSF students but also for students from schools in the state.
According to him, STEM subjects are crucial for the needs and development of the country and this state.
"I hope it will be beneficial and serve as a catalyst for various forms of strategic cooperation between UCSF and various stakeholders. Additionally, it is hoped that the activities conducted by this centre will support and nurture research activities that drive innovation," he said.
