Unity Demonstrated at Lantern Festival in Penampang

PENAMPANG: The Lantern Festival in Penampang today showcased a strong display of unity among Sabah’s diverse communities.


In a speech by Datuk Donald Mojuntin, Deputy President of the United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO), the importance of cultural harmony was emphasised.


Donald thanked community leaders and organisers for their efforts in making the celebration a success. He praised the contributions of local Chinese associations and volunteers, saying, "Their dedication not only revives our cultural traditions but also fosters a spirit of mutual love and respect among our people."

He expressed his happiness at witnessing the multiethnic unity in Sabah, stating, "The Lantern Festival is a symbol of light, hope, happiness, and unity. It reminds us that our togetherness is Sabah’s greatest strength."


The deputy president called on all Sabahans to unite across races and backgrounds to build a better future, urging, "Let us unite in spirit, lighting the way towards progress and prosperity. We must build a better Sabah and a better Penampang for generations to come."


He concluded by wishing everyone a happy Lantern Festival and expressed hope that "the light of the lanterns we celebrate tonight will symbolise a bright path forward."


Meanwhile, Datuk Jannie Lasimbang, the Kapayan State Assemblywoman, called for continued community cooperation and the preservation of cultural traditions.


In her address, she thanked the organisers, community leaders, and volunteers who contributed to the success of the event. She praised the efforts of local associations, government agencies, and NGOs in fostering unity and supporting development initiatives within the district.


She acknowledged the vital role played by village heads and community kapitans (leaders), especially those who organise cultural celebrations such as Chinese New Year and the Lantern Festival. She emphasised that their work helps preserve Sabah’s diverse heritage and strengthens community ties.


Looking ahead, Jannie expressed her hope that the spirit of unity demonstrated during the festival would be maintained and expanded. She encouraged community leaders to continue promoting their culture and to actively participate in guiding their communities towards progress.


She urged residents to uphold harmony and mutual respect, believing that Sabah’s strength lies in its unity and shared values. She expressed confidence that with ongoing cooperation, Penampang’s development and cultural heritage will continue to flourish.


The Lantern Festival was officiated by Datuk Ewon Benedick, the Penampang Member of Parliament who is also the Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives.


Also present during the event were Organising Chairman Alvin Land and Lantern Festival Chairman Kee Kwok Hung among others.
