KOTA KINABALU: The United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO) Kota Kinabalu Division has pledged full support for party president Datuk Ewon Benedick’s decision to resign from the Federal Cabinet, describing it as a courageous and principled act in defence of Sabah’s constitutional rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

UPKO Kota Kinabalu chief Dennison R. Indang said the division fully respects and accepts Ewon’s decision, which he believes was made after careful consideration and rooted in the party’s longstanding struggle to protect the rights and dignity of the people of Sabah.

“We fully respect and accept Datuk Ewon Benedick’s decision with confidence and a deep sense of responsibility. This decision reflects genuine commitment to the principles of our struggle and the spirit of defending Sabah’s rights and interests,” Dennison said in a statement today.

He added that while some may view Ewon’s resignation as a moderate move, it in fact demonstrates sincerity and firmness in upholding the spirit of MA63 and the dignity of the people of Sabah.

Dennison stressed that the UPKO President has consistently fought for Sabah’s fundamental rights, particularly in relation to the Kota Kinabalu High Court’s ruling that ordered the Federal Government to review Article 112C of the Federal Constitution, which concerns the 40% revenue entitlement owed to Sabah from 1974 to 2021.

“UPKO remains steadfast in ensuring that the Federal Government respects the court’s decision and fulfils its obligations fairly and transparently. This is not merely a political issue — it is a constitutional right and a matter of justice that must be upheld for the future of Sabah,” he said.

Dennison also commended Ewon’s boldness and integrity, calling on other leaders from Sabah to emulate his example by standing firm in defence of the state’s rights.

“Datuk Ewon’s courage reflects principled Leadership , a willingness to sacrifice for the sake of Sabah’s rights and the dignity of its people. Leaders from Sabah should be ready to take similar stands to restore the pride of Sabahans that has long been denied,” he added.

The UPKO Kota Kinabalu Division reaffirmed its full and principled support for Ewon’s resignation, describing it as a moral and constitutional stand that embodies the true spirit of MA63 and the ongoing struggle for Sabah’s rightful place within the Federation.
