KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), a research-intensive institution specialising in engineering, science, and technology, is expanding its Open and Distance Learning (ODL) initiative under the UTMHyFlex programme. This initiative aims to enhance access to postgraduate education for learners worldwide.

Launched in 2020 with just three programmes, the UTMHyFlex initiative has since grown to offer 12 programmes, including Malaysia’s pioneering Doctor of Professional Practice. Currently, the ODL programme has enrolled 1,010 students from 22 countries, with 285 graduates to date. In addition to Malaysia, the student body includes individuals from Canada, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Egypt, Sudan, Somalia, Nigeria, Liberia, Iran, China, South Korea, India, and Bangladesh.

According to UTM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Mohd Shafry Mohd Rahim, the university is dedicated to making education inclusive, flexible, and innovative.

"While we encourage our students to engage in independent study using our self-instructional materials, we remain committed to maintaining a personal connection with them. Each programme will have a dedicated course coordinator to address any student queries. Furthermore, each student can attend up to six live synchronous sessions with their lecturer. We believe that this approach fosters a closer relationship between students and lecturers, setting our programme apart."

In addition, UTM has introduced a web-based virtual reality lab designed to significantly enhance the learning experience, particularly in the fields of engineering, science, and technology.

"At UTM, we firmly believe that education should not be constrained by physical boundaries. Our Open and Distance Learning (ODL) programmes present opportunities for learners worldwide to achieve academic excellence through cutting-edge digital platforms and innovative teaching methodologies," he added.

"By integrating our Virtual Reality Lab and recognised research supervision from the UK Council for Graduate Education (UKCGE), we ensure that our postgraduate students receive the same high-quality education as those enrolled in campus-based programmes."

Beyond full-degree offerings, UTM's ODL framework also encompasses micro-credential courses that enable professionals to upskill and reskill in specialised areas aligned with industry demands. These short-term, modular courses provide flexibility for learners keen to enhance their expertise without committing to a full postgraduate programme.

By integrating micro-credentials with graduate ODL programmes, UTM promotes lifelong learning, progressively allowing individuals to develop their skills through stackable credentials. This initiative aligns with Malaysia's vision for a knowledge-driven economy, ensuring that education remains industry-relevant, accessible, and globally competitive.

UTM has also achieved the highest ranking in Malaysia for graduate employability, reinforcing the university's strong industry connections and career-focused curriculum. The university's emphasis on technological integration, quality research, and global recognition makes its ODL programmes highly attractive to students and employers.

With a growing global student base and the rising demand for online postgraduate education, UTM remains progressive in digital higher education innovation. The introduction of the virtual reality lab and recognised research supervision ensures that remote learners receive an engaging and practical academic experience comparable to on-campus studies.
