KOTA KINABALU: Hari Raya Aidil Fitri is a significant celebration for Muslims worldwide, marking the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting. In Sabah this festive occasion is celebrated with a unique blend of cultural traditions that highlight the state's rich diversity and foster unity among its various religious and ethnic communities.
This spirit of inclusivity and community is vividly demonstrated through the celebrations at the Walai Tokou Homestay in Kampung Sinisian, Kundasang. Families and friends gathered in the common area, where vibrant canopies were thoughtfully arranged to provide shade and shelter for the festivities. Tables and chairs were set up, creating an inviting atmosphere for everyone to come together and share in the joyous occasion.
Exquisite spreads of traditional food adorned the tables, each dish prepared with care and attention. The aroma of various local delicacies wafted through the air, enticing guests and promising a delightful culinary experience. The setting not only highlighted the festive spirit but also underscored the importance of communal bonding, as guests enjoyed hearty meals together, celebrating not just Hari Raya, but also the rich tapestry of cultures that make up this beautiful region.

The ambiance was filled with laughter and warmth, as individuals from different backgrounds exchanged stories and created lasting memories, truly embodying the essence of togetherness that characterises Sabah.
Kohadie Watiman, the spokesperson for Walai Tokou Homestay and who is also the Deputy President of Homestay Malaysia embodies the perfect host as he mingled with the crowd, greeting everyone with cheerfulness.
Kohadie said, “The celebration of Hari Raya extends beyond the Muslim community; it is a joyous occasion that brings together friends and family from various ethnic groups. Such celebrations play a significant role in strengthening ties within the community while fostering friendship and understanding among diverse cultures.”

“As a tourism operator managing homestay accommodations, among others, inclusivity during this festive period is very important. In a way, this celebration is also a tourism attraction. We have domestic and international guests with us today and when they come back from their activities, they will join in our celebration,” he said adding that this aspect of inclusivity distinguishes Sabah, where residents have coexisted peacefully and harmoniously, regardless of their ethnic backgrounds or religious beliefs, through the years.
Kohadie asserted that fostering this sense of community and inclusivity can be achieved through numerous activities and celebrations, alongside everyday interactions. By actively embracing cultural diversity during special occasions like Hari Raya, Sabah sets a remarkable example of unity and acceptance that resonates with visitors and locals alike.
Duanis Mogirong, the coordinator for Tanak Nabalu Homestay, who visited to join in the celebrations, expressed his deep appreciation for occasions like Hari Raya, stating that they are an integral part of the culture and traditions of the community.
"Visiting one another during such celebrations strengthens friendship and rapport," he remarked, emphasising the importance of these gatherings in fostering connections among people. He commended the homestay for hosting such an event, praising their efforts in bringing the community together and promoting it to tourists.
Datuk Joanna Kitingan, Chairperson of the KDCA Women’s Council, who was also in attendance, expressed her strong belief in the significance of such events. She emphasised that she made the effort to drive to Walai Tokou Homestay to celebrate the occasion with the local community, recognising that any Hari Raya celebration held in a homestay serves as a delightful attraction.
“It has the potential to promote tourism and provide visitors with a glimpse into how these celebrations are observed in village settings,” she noted, adding that showcasing such events to tourists not only enhances the tourism experience but also fosters camaraderie and strengthens friendships within the community.
Hari Raya Aidilfitri in Sabah is not just a religious observance; it is a celebration of cultural diversity and social harmony. The festival showcases how, despite differences in faith and ethnicity, the people of Sabah come together to celebrate shared values of compassion, generosity, and community. This unity is a testament to Sabah's rich cultural tapestry, making the celebration a truly inclusive and joyous occasion for everyone.
