KOTA BELUD: The Covid-19 cases in Malaysia would not have kept soaring if the Perikatan Nasional (PN) Government indeed "worked tirelessly" to handle the matter, as mentioned by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today in his special address today, Upko Vice President Datuk Ewon Benedick.
In his statement, he stated that Covid-19 fatalities would not have reached a high number and the health machinery and system would not have been critical if the government really did work hard to tackle the issue.
"Why did the Emergency Ordinances and Proclamation fail to address and resolve the pandemic then, when it was implemented to purportedly curb the spread of Covid-19?
"If you did work tirelessly, then why did the people's economy continue to collapse with so many losing their jobs and sources of income, and feel marginalised from the aid programmes? Why let the rakyat wave the white flag begging for help from the other?
"If you indeed worked hard, why did the doctors protest? Why did the people go to Dataran Merdeka to voice out their frustration and anger?"
The State Assemblyman for Kadamaian also queried why the PN Cabinet members and allies were dismissed of any punishment despite having violated the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
He stated that while some PN members were dismissed for remorselessly making unemphatic jokes towards the people, the people on the other hand are fined and arrested for voicing out mere criticisms on the leadership of the government.
"If it is true that you have worked hard to manage the Covid-19 pandemic, why disobey the orders of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Conference of Rulers?"
Earlier, a statement from the palace was issued last June urging for Parliament to reconvene immediately. However, Muhyiddin only called for a special meeting in late July.
"You have not worked hard to manage this pandemic. You are incompetent and have no leadership. What you are working hard for is to maintain your position and this has triggered new crises," Ewon lamented.
In his special address today, Muhyiddin stated the PN government has been working tirelessly to deal with the pandemic.
However, he asserted that the act of several MPs withdrawing their support has caused the government's legitimacy to be questioned, including his position as a Prime Minister.
