KOTA KINABALU: Young people can continue to play meaningful roles in their communities despite the enforcement of the new youth age limit of 15 to 30 years, which will take effect on 1 January 2026.

Young Malaysians Movement (YMM) Kota Kinabalu Advisor Datuk Eliza Goh said this is because young people are the pillars of the nation and remain vital to Malaysia’s growth and development.

“This is evident as YMM has produced many outstanding individuals, entrepreneurs, politicians, lawyers, accountants, chefs, and other professionals, who have contributed significantly to making our country what it is today,” she said.

Eliza was speaking after witnessing the installation of office bearers for YMM Kota Kinabalu for the 2025–2027 term, chaired by Sheena Tan Yu Yuan, at the Jesselton Twin Tower recently.

Also present were YMM Sabah President Wong Ying Ting and several former members.

The current definition of youth in Malaysia covers those aged 15 to 40, but this will be revised following the implementation of the Youth Societies and Youth Development (Amendment) Act 2018.

For YMM members aged above 30, Eliza encouraged them to continue serving as advisors and mentors to guide and empower younger members.

“I have always focused on empowering women and young people, and on helping disadvantaged groups, particularly women,” she said.

“You can empower more young people. In this day and age, we truly need leaders like you because the world today is filled with confusion.”

Eliza expressed concern over the widespread misinformation on social media that is confusing young people, noting that even parents often struggle to guide their children effectively.

“We need YMM to step forward and support the younger generation through activities that promote leadership and build a better future,” she urged.

She also described YMM as a valuable platform that helps young people develop interpersonal, social, and communication skills, preparing them to face future challenges.

Eliza added that even those who face disadvantages can benefit from their experiences, as every challenge carries a lesson that contributes to personal growth.
