SANDAKAN: The Founder and Chairman of the Sandakan Heritage Trail, Lai King Hang, together with members of his team, recently engaged with YB Datuk Jafry bin Hj Ariffin, Sabah’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, during the launch of the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) Entrance Foyer and the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre’s new Information Centre and Boardwalk.

While Sandakan is internationally recognised for its rich biodiversity and wildlife attractions, the town also holds a unique position as Sabah’s historical centre, having served as the pre-war capital of British North Borneo. Stakeholders emphasised that future tourism development must strike a careful balance between economic growth and the preservation of both natural and cultural heritage. Maintaining the original character of the town, they noted, is essential in creating a sustainable and valuable asset for long-term tourism.

Significant progress has been observed under the new leadership of Walter Kenson, President of the Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS). Over the past six months, efforts to transform and revitalise Sandakan have accelerated markedly, aligning with the aspirations of the local community.

“Sandakan Heritage Trail is one of the most popular heritage trails in Sabah and was recently recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records as the first Historical Tree Trail in Malaysia,” said Lai.

“Since its inception 23 years ago, it has built a strong following and remains the only visible and free tourism product in Sandakan town, covering 10 heritage sites. It is a particular magnet for international visitors.”

Also present at the ceremony were Walter Kenson, President of MPS; Dato’ Shaharuddin bin Abu Sohot, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC); Datuk Frederick Kugan, Chief Conservator of the Sabah Forestry Department; and Dr Wong Siew Tee, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of the BSBCC, along with other officials.

Representing the Sandakan Heritage Trail Committee were Lily Aw; CK Teo, who is also President of the Sandakan Tourism Association (STAN); and Dr Arthur Chung, Deputy Chief Conservator of the Sabah Forestry Department.
