KOTA KINABALU: The ANGKASA Foundation Education Fund to assist students who are children of cooperative members in Sabah was launched today.

Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Datuk Ewon Benedick said that since the year 2000, the ANGKASA Foundation has provided educational financial assistance to 1,898 students nationwide, amounting to a total of RM34.9 million.

“Of that amount, 14 students from Sabah have benefitted, receiving a total of RM183,000," he stated in his launching speech at the event.

“The launch of this education fund demonstrates the commitment and determination of the cooperative movement to support the children of its members, particularly in Sabah."

“I hope more cooperatives and corporate sectors will come forward to contribute through the ANGKASA Foundation,” he said.

Ewon said this to reporters after officiating at the Hi-Tea and Launch of the ANGKASA Foundation Education Fund held at the Klagan Hotel here today.

At the ministerial level, Ewon said he has agreed to increase the Malaysian Cooperative Commission’s (SKM) contribution to the ANGKASA Foundation from RM500,000 to RM1 million this year.

“Last year, we channelled RM500,000 from the Cooperative Trust Fund, but this year we have agreed to double the amount to RM1 million so that the ANGKASA Foundation can assist more children of cooperative members, especially those from the B40 income group or families facing financial challenges in paying their children’s university fees,” he said.

Ewon also said that, in addition to assistance from the ANGKASA Foundation, the Sabah State Government has agreed to allocate 35 state scholarships to Sabah students pursuing their studies at Universiti Koperasi Malaysia (UKKM).

“Sabah is the first state government to provide scholarships for students from the state to study at UKKM. I truly appreciate the state government’s commitment and cooperation,” he added.

He further said that discussions have also been held with the Sarawak Government and several other state governments in Peninsular Malaysia to consider offering scholarships through their respective state foundations for students wishing to study at UKKM.
