TAMBUNAN: A basket weaving programme aimed at preserving traditional craftsmanship while promoting modern innovation was officially launched at Kg Morondom here today. The event highlighted the cultural and economic significance of the craft in Sabah was attended by 60 participants

Speaking at the event, the guest of honour Datin Juliana Janni, Patron of the Tambunan Single Mothers’ Association emphasised that traditional weaving, encompassing items such as mats, paddy containers, and baskets, remains a valuable cultural heritage among ethnic communities in Malaysia, particularly in Sabah and Sarawak.

Traditionally crafted using natural materials such as rattan, bamboo, pandan, and mengkuang, woven baskets require a high level of skill, patience, and precision, she said.

Beyond their practical use in storing and carrying agricultural produce, these items symbolise cultural identity and local wisdom passed down through generations, according to her.

"In today’s evolving landscape, the craft has adapted to modern demands through the use of alternative materials such as plastic. These contemporary baskets are increasingly জনপ্র due to their durability, water resistance, and accessibility."

"The availability of diverse colours has also enabled more creative and modern designs, appealing to current market tastes while retaining traditional weaving techniques," she stressed.

The programme underscores the importance of bridging tradition and innovation to ensure the sustainability of the craft.

It also serves as a platform to engage younger generations through training and entrepreneurial initiatives, creating new income opportunities within the community.

The event also recognised the contribution of Ewon Benedick, President of UPKO, who provided a RM10,000 allocation to support the programme.

His contribution is expected to enhance the implementation of activities while ensuring the continued preservation and promotion of traditional weaving, Juliana said.

She noted that such support reflects a strong commitment to uplifting local culture and strengthening grassroots economic development.

The initiative also provides opportunities for participants to learn, refine their skills, and explore income-generating prospects through handicrafts..

With strong backing from community leaders and active public participation, the programme is expected to grow and make a lasting impact.

"It is also envisioned to position local woven products for wider markets, including at the international level," she said.

She called for continued collaboration among all stakeholders to sustain the momentum of the initiative, ensuring that the art of weaving remains vibrant, relevant, and beneficial for future generations.
