Borneo Safari Showcases Sabah’s Leadership in Adventure Tourism

KOTA KINABALU: The 33rd Borneo Safari, one of Asia’s most anticipated off-road events, has once again placed Sabah at the forefront of adventure tourism, with other states taking note of its successful model of collaboration and execution.

Sabah Tourism Board (STB) Chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai officially flagged off the event today from the STB headquarters at Gaya Street, marking the beginning of an eight-day expedition deep into the interior jungles of Sabah.

Also present was Terengganu Tourism, Culture, Environment and Climate Change Committee Chairman Datuk Razali Idris, representing his state’s tourism committee, which aims to learn from Sabah’s approach in hosting large-scale adventure-based tourism events.

Joniston said he was encouraged by the growing interest from other states seeking to understand how Sabah leverages its natural landscapes and community partnerships to create tourism products with international appeal.

“Sabah’s experience demonstrates that adventure tourism can serve as a key driver of rural economic growth while strengthening our identity as a destination for nature and outdoor enthusiasts,” he said.

He added that inter-state knowledge sharing could help build a stronger and more diverse tourism industry across Malaysia.

Joniston also commended Sabah Four Wheel Drive Association President Faez Nordin and his committee for their dedication and professionalism in managing the event.

This year’s Borneo Safari has drawn a record 640 vehicles and participants from 14 countries, with China joining the event for the first time.
