KOTA KINABALU: The Chinese Consul General in Sabah Dr. Zhu Xinglong highlighted the deepening friendship and strategic partnership between China, Malaysia, and Sabah, signalling a new chapter of mutual benefit and cooperation.
Speaking during a Media Briefing on the Spirit of China’s “Two Sessions” at the consulate yesterday, he stated that China-Malaysia relations are at their strongest in history, guided by shared leadership and vision. Reflecting the spirit of China’s recent Two Sessions, he expressed hope for building a high-level, strategic community with a shared future.
Celebrating five years of the China-ASEAN Partnership, the diplomat noted growing trade, cultural exchanges, and regional collaboration. As part of RCEP, China and Malaysia have strengthened economic ties, with high-level visits boosting bilateral relations.
Dr. Zhu said in Sabah, the impact is clear. As a key part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, Sabah’s strategic location and resources have attracted increasing Chinese investment. China remains Sabah’s biggest trading partner, expanding from infrastructure projects like the Ulu Padas Hydroelectric Plant to sectors such as renewable energy, digital technology, and green industries, led by companies like Kibing Group.
Chinese businesses are helping modernise Sabah’s economy, creating jobs and nurturing local talent, he said adding that they also actively contribute to community projects, infrastructure, disaster relief, and education, fostering genuine integration and shared prosperity.
According to him, tourism is a vital link, with Chinese visitors reaching a record 690,000 in 2025, almost 15% of Malaysia’s total Chinese tourists. With upcoming initiatives like Visit Malaysia Year 2026 and Visit Sabah Year 2027, and visa-exemption policies, tourism is set to flourish, boosting Sabah’s hospitality sector and cultural exchange.
The Consul General reaffirmed China’s commitment to working closely with Sabah’s authorities and communities, ensuring safe, high-quality tourism experiences and stronger ties. He concluded by inviting Sabah to ride the wave of China’s development and join in building a prosperous, shared future.
