Covid-19: New Covid-19 cluster detected in Kinabatangan plantation

KOTA KINABALU: A new Covid-19 cluster involving a palm oil plantation has been detected in Kinabatangan today.


Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun said that the Sawit Kinabatangan 2 cluster in Mukim Sukau is categorised as a workplace infection.


“The index case is a 19-year-old Indonesian, a dependent of one of the workers in the plantation.


“The index case tested positive on Aug 23, after having symptoms since Aug 18, and is is currently being treated in Kinabatangan Hospital,” he said in a statement.


Following the case, 123 close contacts tested positive including some of the farmworkers.


“Further investigation, sampling and disinfection activities are still being carried out to assess the risk and possibilities of the infection spreading to other farms."
