COVID-19: TWO PRISONS CONTRIBUTE TO SABAH'S 666 DAILY CASES

KOTA KINABALU: Two Covid-19 clusters involving prisons contributed to the soaring number of 666 daily cases in Sabah today, bringing the cumulative total of statewide infections to 75,145.


However, Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun said two deaths related to the virus were also reported today with one each in Lahad Datu and Beaufort.


“50 per cent of the cases today were from two prisons, with 211 cases from Kepayan Prison, in Kota Kinabalu and Tawau Prison with 123 cases.


“Of the total cases today, 449 cases were detected through cluster screening, while 129 were detected through close contact screening, 48 through symptomatic screening, 32 from targeted screening and eight from other categories.


“The second highest cases recorded today is Tawau with 145 cases, followed by Sandakan (53), Sipitang (48), Kalabakan (31), Beaufort (27), Kota Belud (17), Penampang (16), Kinabatangan (10), Keningau and Telupid (nine), Putatan (eight), Kudat (six), Papar (four), Tuaran (three), Semporna (two).


“Districts that did not record any cases today are Pitas, Beluran, Kota Marudu, Lahad Datu, Ranau, Kunak, Tongod, Kuala Penyu, Nabawan, Tambunan and Tenom," he said in a statement today.


The number of active cases now stands at 30,058 with 462 treated at hospitals, 1,815 in quarantine centres and 781 in detention centres.


"The number of patients treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) is 56 with nine requiring ventilator support," he stated.


As for recoveries, a total of 275 discharges were reported today, bringing the cumulative total of recoveries in Sabah to 71,232.
