KOTA KINABALU: Dr Mary Gambidau from Telupid has been officially appointed as Chairperson of the State-level Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan 2026 (UNK 2026), taking on a key role in steering one of Sabah’s most iconic cultural events.
Her appointment reflects a continued commitment to strengthening Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan as a premier platform for preserving and celebrating cultural heritage, while empowering young women as custodians of tradition and future community leaders.
Datuk Joanna Datuk Kitingan has also been named Advisor for UNK 2026, where she will provide strategic guidance and leadership support to ensure the smooth organisation of the event.
To enhance governance, Dr Mary has formed a main organising committee comprising Mandy Nandu as Deputy Chairperson, Audrey Wilson Rantau as Secretary, and Maureen J. Kananong as Treasurer, supported by a team of experienced committee members.
Preparations began in February, with several improvements introduced, including early-stage evaluations for finalists in line with the mandate of the KDCA Central Committee. The initiative aims to raise professionalism, transparency and the overall quality of participant selection.
The highlight of UNK 2026 will take place during Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan Week from 26 to 31 May, bringing together 52 finalists from across Sabah, including participants based in Peninsular Malaysia.
A series of official programmes, cultural activities, evaluation sessions and character-building initiatives have been planned throughout the week.
Organisers have also confirmed Hilton Kota Kinabalu as the official hotel for this year’s edition.
UNK 2026 is expected to continue serving as a prestigious platform to preserve and promote Sabah’s cultural heritage, while strengthening the role of women and reinforcing the state’s cultural identity at both national and international levels.
