SANDAKAN: Flood prevention efforts in Kampung Contoh Batu 16 received a boost when Nominated Assemblyman Datuk Jaffari Waliam took to the ground to lead a community clean-up focused on clearing and widening the drainage system in the area on Sunday.

The programme, which began at 8.30 a.m., saw participation from local residents, members of the Nominated Assemblyman’s Service Centre Committee, and representatives from the Rukun Tetangga (KRT) of PPR Gum-Gum.

Thorough cleaning was carried out, targeting blocked drains, while widening works were undertaken using a Case-brand heavy-duty excavator to help improve water flow into nearby catchment areas.

According to Jaffari, the proactive measure was prompted by previous flood incidents that had submerged parts of the village.

“Narrow and clogged drains have been the main cause of overflow during heavy rains. With this community effort, we hope to reduce the flood risk that has long troubled the residents,” he said when met at the site.

He expressed his gratitude to all those who contributed to the success of the initiative and urged residents to continue maintaining cleanliness in the surrounding areas to ensure the drainage system remains functional.

“The spirit of cooperation shown here is truly commendable. It’s proof that when everyone comes together, many issues can be resolved for the common good,” he added.

Jaffari said the programme was part of his ongoing commitment to addressing the needs of the people and ensuring that basic infrastructure issues in rural areas remain a top priority.
