KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) faces numerous challenges in the waters of Sabah and Sarawak, particularly in effectively communicating with diverse maritime communities speaking various languages, including Mandarin.

Recognising this obstacle, MMEA has taken proactive steps to address the issue by initiating language training programs.

The inaugural Mandarin communication skills course, held at AKMAL in Manggatal, Kota Kinabalu, was inaugurated by First Admiral Ahmad Faridi Ferdaus, Director of the Maritime Crime Investigation Division.

Commencing on August 19 and spanning five days, the course aimed to equip 15 MMEA officers from Sabah and Sarawak, specialising in radio communication, with essential Mandarin language skills. Maritime Commander Hasbullah, the course facilitator, oversaw the training conducted by Dr. Cherry Wei, an education specialist from China representing ACC Global Consultation Sdn Bhd.

Dr. Wei emphasised the significance of such initiatives in fostering international relations, both at sea and on land, especially given the growing popularity of Sabah and Sarawak as tourist destinations among the global community.

The importance of communication skills in enhancing maritime security and cooperation was underscored, with a commitment to further prioritize language training within MMEA and other security agencies.

The successful conclusion of the course was marked by Maritime Captain Boon Chin Chau Deputy Director of Operations of MMEA Sabah, highlighting the agency's dedication to promoting effective communication strategies for maritime operations in the region.
