KOTA KINABALU: Pitas, a district in Sabah, is gradually emerging as a vibrant tourist destination, thanks to the efforts of the newly established Pitas Tourism Association. Although still in its infancy, the association is making strides in promoting the area's natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Spokesperson for the association, Rhappindy Maibin, shared that their journey began in 2019 when the local community started sharing stories and showcasing attractions through social media and word of mouth. Initially, there was limited exposure on platforms like Google, and tourism activities were not yet fully developed or visible outside the local community.

Today, the community is collaborating to develop comprehensive tourism packages. One of the flagship offerings is the "Pitas Exploration" package, which allows visitors to explore the diverse sites within the district. While the current packages are well-rounded, ongoing efforts aim to discover hidden spots in the area, such as Bongkol Waterfall, which are still under the management of other agencies.

A standout destination in the area is Bukit Piniapat, managed by the local community of Bukit Piniapat. The hill offers a variety of activities, including hiking, relaxation, and stargazing at the Milky Way viewing spot. Visitors can also enjoy sunset viewpoints, pre-wedding photo shoots, and camping sites. These activities aim to provide a relaxing and memorable experience, with packages tailored to suit different preferences and budgets.

Rhappindy, better known as Andy, shared that one popular package—the three-day, two-night option at RM350 per person—offers a comprehensive experience without rushing, allowing visitors to unwind and create lasting memories. The packages include meals, mainly seafood, and boat transportation, with flexibility for guests to bring their own food if they have dietary restrictions or preferences.

Most visitors currently come directly to Pitas, with accommodation options increasing each year. From Kota Kinabalu, tourists can travel to Pitas, but since the area is still developing, collaborations with travel agents and transportation providers are limited. The community primarily uses community-owned boats, such as Pitubot, operated by the Malubang community, which are insured and responsible for transportation.

As the area develops, the community is learning about licensing and permits required for tourism-related transportation, ensuring compliance with regulations while maintaining an authentic experience.

Andy said there are legends of Bukit Piniapat and Pulau Supirak, adding that beyond the natural attractions, Pitas is rich in folklore and legends that add a mystical charm to the region. Bukit Piniapat, once just ordinary hills, was transformed into a popular hiking spot through community effort.

“Named after four landowners—my sisters—the name Piniapat was carefully chosen, reflecting the four parcels of land on the hill,” Andy said.

The legends of the area also include the story of Nakoda Supirak, a revered figure among the local community. The island of Supirak, which resembles a ship, is believed to be the remains of a large vessel owned by Nakoda Supirak.

According to local folklore, the ship and its crew were cursed for disobedience to the captain’s mother and subsequently turned into stone, creating the island we see today. This story shares similarities with the tale of Si Tanggang, another popular legend from another region in Malaysia.  But Supirak is uniquely localised within the Malubang and Pitas communities.

As Pitas continues to develop its tourism sector, the community remains dedicated to preserving its legends, natural beauty, and cultural heritage. With ongoing collaborations, innovative packages, and a commitment to responsible tourism, Pitas is poised to become a must-visit destination in Sabah.

With the upcoming Visit Malaysia 2026 (VMY2026), visitors are invited to explore its scenic hills, legendary stories, and warm hospitality, promising an experience that is both enriching and unforgettable.
