BINGKOR: Long-overdue irrigation and drainage works have begun in Mukim Tuntumulud, Keningau, bringing relief to local farmers who have faced water flow problems affecting their paddy fields for years.
The Keningau District Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) has started dredging and clearing blocked drainage channels in the area following public complaints raised to the authorities.
The project involves removing silt, weeds, and debris that have obstructed water flow, improving the efficiency of the irrigation system and reducing the risk of flash floods in Mukim Tuntumulud, Mukim Bingkor, and nearby villages.

A local farmer, Moses Sadoon Lasawon from Kampung Buang Sayang, said the work came at an important time as the planting season begins.
“This is a much-needed effort. A proper irrigation system is vital for our crops, and we’re grateful to JPS Keningau and Bingkor Assemblyman Datuk Robert Tawik for responding to our concerns,” he said.

Community leaders KK Nelson Jiun, Head of Kampung Tangkongon, and Julian Flavinus Lian Likang @ Mohd Hafiz, President of the Gana Sabah Association (PGS), also welcomed the action taken by the authorities.
“The quick response shows concern for the people’s needs. This is more than just cleaning work, it reflects a real effort to restore the well-being of the farming community,” they said.
Residents credited Robert for bringing their complaints to the attention of JPS, describing the move as proof of effective and people-focused leadership.

With the irrigation channels now flowing smoothly, farmers say the improvement will help stabilise water supply to their fields and boost agricultural productivity.
The sound of machinery and the sight of clean waterways, they added, signal renewed hope for the farming community in Bingkor.
