KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian Consumers Foundation (YPNM) Sabah Branch welcomes the firm stance taken by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) in addressing the issue of excessive and unreasonable tourist transport fares.

David Chan YPNM Chairman said they have received an increase in complaints from both local consumers and tourists regarding inconsistent and inflated charges, particularly involving transport services from airports, tour packages, and e-hailing services.

If this issue is not addressed promptly, it has the potential to affect Malaysia’s image as a fair, transparent and tourist-friendly destination, he stated.

According to him, YPNM fully supports KPDN’s commitment to intensifying monitoring and enforcement against any form of price manipulation or profiteering.

All service providers are urged to adhere to fair pricing principles and ensure that charge information is clearly displayed to consumers before services are rendered.

In this regard, YPNM calls for stronger and more consistent enforcement to curb the practice of excessive charges.

They also called for clear and transparent price displays for all tourist transport services as well as

close collaboration between KPDN, tourism authorities and local authorities to ensure compliance.

They urged immediate action against offenders, including stricter penalties as a deterrent.

YPNM also encourages consumers and tourists to remain vigilant and to lodge complaints through KPDN’s official channels should any element of fraud or unreasonable charges occur.

As Malaysia continues to strengthen its tourism sector, it is crucial to ensure that transparency, integrity and fairness within the industry are upheld, Chan said.

Consumer protection will enhance tourist confidence and strengthen the country’s competitiveness at the international level.

YPNM remains committed to championing consumer rights and working with relevant parties to ensure a fair and transparent market for all, he reiterated.
