KOTA KINABALU: Geopolitical conflict in West Asia is no longer a purely regional concern but has triggered global repercussions, including an energy crisis and rising oil prices that are placing direct pressure on Asian economies, said Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Chan Foong Hin.

He said disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have highlighted the fragility of global fuel supply stability, warning that the situation should not be taken lightly.

“The implications are far-reaching, extending to food supply chains and ultimately affecting the cost of living for the people,” he said.

Chan noted that while Malaysia continues to demonstrate a reasonable degree of resilience in facing the global crisis, there is no room for complacency.

“The Government remains committed to staying prepared by taking proactive measures to address various possibilities, including worst-case scenarios,” he said.

Earlier, Chan attended a briefing on the presentation of a National Economic Action Council (MTEN) paper to the Minister, focusing on the current state of the nation’s food supply and measures needed to strengthen mitigation efforts.

“The briefing focused on ensuring that our food supply remains secure while enhancing preparedness to any potential disruptions,” he said.

The MTEN meeting, to be chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, is scheduled to take place tomorrow (March 31).

Chan expressed hope that the discussions would provide some relief to stakeholders in the agricultural sector.

“I hope the meeting will bring positive outcomes for industry players, particularly those in the fisheries and crop cultivation sectors, who are currently facing significant challenges due to ongoing global developments,” he said.
