KOTA KINABALU: George Hiew Vun Zin, a Sabah State Legislative Assemblyman from Parti Warisan Sabah, has announced his departure from the party to join Gagasan Rakyat Sabah.

He cited the political instability in Sabah as his reason for leaving and expressed his concerns that it is hindering the economic development and progress of the region, including the Karamunting area of Sandakan.

"The people of Sabah are tired of the political turmoil. Only with a stable political environment, we can bring about the necessary reforms and development needed in Karamunting," said Hiew.

He expressed his support for the leadership of the Unity Government's Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the Sabah government under the leadership of Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

Hiew previously won the Karamunting State Legislative Assembly seat under the Warisan ticket in both the 2018 General Election and the 2020 State Election.

He also served as the Assistant Minister of Housing and Local Government under the Warisan government for two years.

"I thank Warisan President Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal for the opportunity given to me in the political arena.

“But now is the time to unite the people of Sabah, develop the region, and demand their rights as enshrined in the 1963 Malaysia Agreement (MA63)," said Hiew.

Hiew pledged to contribute all his energy and time to work towards the welfare of the people in his area and to bring the necessary development to Karamunting.

Hiew's departure marks the fifth Adun to leave Warisan since last month and the eleventh since the Sabah State Election in 2020.

Following this latest development, Warisan now has only 14 assemblymen, including two former DAP assemblymen, out of 23 after the 2020 State Election.
