SANDAKAN: Heavy rain and strong winds that struck Kampung Bokara, Karamunting, last Thursday (2 October) caused the sudden collapse of home belonging to a person with disabilities (OKU).

Concerned for the victim’s plight, Karamunting Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah Division Chief, Datuk George Hiew Vun Zin, promptly contacted the Sandakan Social Welfare Department to arrange immediate relief assistance.

“We will not allow him to face this hardship alone. Urgent aid will be provided to help ease his burden,” he said.

He added that he was thankful Kampung Bokara had been arranged for gazettement as an official village, enabling affected residents to qualify for various forms of government assistance.

“I am grateful that my initiative to have Kampung Bokara gazetted has benefitted the local community. Had it not been gazetted, they might not have been eligible for welfare aid or any form of government support,” he explained.

George also stated that applications for financial aid and additional welfare assistance from relevant agencies had been submitted on behalf of the victim.

“He is still in shock and saddened by the incident. I want to ensure he receives the assistance he rightfully deserves,” he added.
