KOTA KINABALU: The Hope Society Sabah held its annual charity dinner last evening, with speeches highlighting the organisation’s ongoing efforts to support underprivileged children across Sabah. The event was officiated by Datuk Seri Panglima Christina Liew, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah, and the Society’s founder.

In her keynote address, Society Chairperson Josephine Hadikusumo expressed gratitude to all attendees, distinguished guests, partners, and supporters, for their commitment to the cause. She emphasised that the gathering was more than just a dinner; it was a call to action to bring hope to children in need.

Founded in 2007 by Liew, the Society of Hope Sabah has evolved from distributing necessities during disasters to focusing on supporting children from B40 and hardcore poor families. “Our mission is rooted in the belief that no child should be left behind because of poverty,” Hadikusumo stated.

She highlighted key achievements, including the distribution of over 7,400 units of milk during the pandemic and a record-breaking initiative in 2022, more than 10,000 stationery sets delivered to 80 schools in 20 districts, recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records.

The speech also shared a poignant story from a school visit, where a young girl fainted from hunger, underscoring the urgent need for intervention and support. “Poverty isn’t just a number; it’s a child collapsing from hunger,” Hadikusumo remarked.

Looking ahead, the Society plans to expand its programmes in 2026 and 2027, providing school supplies and scholarships to children across all 27 districts in Sabah. The goal is to equip every child with the tools necessary for learning and to inspire them to believe in a brighter future.

She concluded with a heartfelt call to support the Society, encouraging attendees to consider making it their preferred charity. “When you give, you’re not just donating items or money; you’re empowering families and transforming lives. Hope is what changes lives,” she affirmed.

The event underscored the collective responsibility of the community to uplift their children and build a brighter future together. Supporters were reminded that every contribution, no matter how small, can make a significant difference in the lives of Sabah’s most vulnerable children.
