KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s Christmas festivities this year have been infused with a powerful message of hope for peace and love, as the state marks the festive season with splendour and unity. The event, held at the historic Padang Merdeka, was organised by the Sabah Council of Churches and Kota Kinabalu City Hall, bringing together diverse communities in a celebration of faith, harmony, and togetherness.
In his speech, Datuk Ewon Benedick, the Minister of Industry, Entrepreneur, and Transport and the Organising Chair of the State-level Christmas Celebration, emphasised the importance of embodying the theme, “Hope for Peace in Love.” “This theme reminds us that in the spirit of love, we can foster lasting peace and understanding among all Sabahans,” he stated. “It is a call for us to continue building a community rooted in respect, compassion, and unity, particularly during this festive season.”
Ewon who is also the Deputy Chief Minister III, highlighted the government’s commitment to promoting religious festivities in Sabah. “The Sabah Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor, has demonstrated openness and dedication in elevating our celebrations to a state level, reflecting our shared values of harmony and mutual respect,” he added.
The celebration not only serves as a religious and cultural occasion but also provides opportunities for small entrepreneurs and vendors to participate, offering food and goods for the People’s Feast programme. Ewon expressed hope that such initiatives would strengthen community bonds and stimulate local economic activity.
As the festive season continues, Ewon urged all Sabahans to unite in fostering peace, love, and co-operation. “With the spirit of mutual love and understanding, our leaders and people can work together to advance economic progress, improve welfare, and develop our infrastructure, in line with Sabah First’s vision,” he said.
The event at Padang Merdeka was officially launched by the Head of State Tun Musa Aman who was accompanied by his Consort Toh Puan Faridah Tussin, various community leaders, government officials, and residents who shared in the joy and hope that Christmas brings. Ewon concluded by extending his warm wishes for a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year 2026, expressing optimism that the season’s message of love and peace will guide Sabah towards a brighter future.
The Sabah State-Level Christmas Celebration will be held from 16 to 19 December 2025 at Padang Merdeka.
