KOTA KINABALU: The Ambassador of Hungary to Malaysia, Dr Sándor Sipos, said that Hungary and Malaysia, particularly Sabah, have strong prospects for cooperation in sustainable agriculture, technology transfer, research and innovation, and the use of agricultural waste for renewable energy.

Speaking during his official visit to Sabah, Dr Sipos noted that the growing volume of agricultural waste is a shared global challenge.

He said that through collaborative research and technology sharing, converting agricultural waste into green energy would not only reduce environmental burdens but also create new economic opportunities.

Dr Sipos paid a courtesy call on the Sabah Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry, Datuk Jamawi Jaafar, during which both sides exchanged views on a range of issues of mutual interest. They reviewed the long-standing historical and cultural ties between Hungary and Sabah, observing that the enduring friendship between their peoples provides a strong foundation for deeper cooperation.

Discussions focussed on agricultural modernisation, sustainable development and the green economy. Both parties agreed that promoting technology transfer in sustainable and renewable energy production will be a key direction for future collaboration.

Dr Sipos said Hungary has extensive experience in agricultural technology, waste management, biomass energy and other green energy technologies.

He expressed hope that Hungary and Sabah will strengthen cooperation to jointly explore practical solutions for converting agricultural waste into renewable energy, contributing to green transformation efforts and sustainable development goals.

He added that closer bilateral ties would not only enhance the exchange of technology and expertise but also yield positive outcomes for economic development, environmental protection and food security.

The meeting also covered the treatment and resource use of agricultural and household waste, as well as wider directions in sustainable agriculture and renewable energy development.

Dr Sipos revealed that the Government of Hungary currently offers 40 scholarships to Malaysian students each year, and he encouraged more students from Sabah and Sarawak to consider studying in Hungary to bolster educational and talent links.

Also present at the meeting was the Honorary Consul of Hungary in Malaysia, Datuk Damien Chua.
