SANDAKAN: The construction project for the Sandakan Islamic Centre commenced in 2017 with a budget of RM60 million on a 5.2-hectare site. However, it faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and changes in state government leadership at the time.
Had these two significant obstacles not arisen, the project—intended to become an iconic landmark for the Sandakan district—would likely have been completed within the planned four-year timeframe.
Today, His Excellency Tun Datuk Seri Panglima (Dr.) Musa Haji Aman, who conceptualised the project, visited the Islamic Centre site after receiving a briefing from Datuk Jasmine Teo, Director of the State Economic Planning Unit, alongside the architect and contractor involved.
Once completed, the Islamic Centre will serve as a focal point for religious and cultural activities, promoting Islamic teachings, values, and traditions. It will provide facilities for prayers, educational programmes, and community gatherings, thereby strengthening unity among the Muslim community in Sandakan and the surrounding areas.
With its unique architectural design, the Islamic Centre is expected to become a major attraction for tourists, boosting industries related to tourism such as hospitality, transportation, and local businesses.
Beyond being a place of worship, the Islamic Centre will also function as a platform for social welfare programmes, charitable initiatives, and skills development courses. It will offer support services such as counselling, youth programmes, and assistance for the underprivileged, thereby reinforcing community development efforts within the district.
The construction of the Islamic Centre will significantly contribute to the overall development of Sandakan’s urban landscape.
Given its potential religious, economic, and social impact, the completion of the Islamic Centre is highly anticipated. It is essential to make concerted efforts to overcome the delays and expedite the project's progress.
