KOTA KINABALU: The use of the term ‘kafir’ in a speech by Parti Warisan President, Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, cannot be taken lightly and must be handled with full responsibility.
The issue carries significant weight given the religious sensitivities and the diverse communities in Sabah, who have long lived in harmony.
UPKO Treasurer-General Dennison R. Indang said conflicting responses from Warisan leaders regarding the matter have in fact created confusion among the people.
**“An apology signifies an acceptance of responsibility. Yet, at the same time, certain Warisan leaders continue to argue that the term was not offensive as it merely referred to non-Muslims. Such mixed messages only deepen public confusion and risk fuelling greater unease.
“At the same time, Warisan’s attempt to shift attention to the withdrawal of the 40 per cent revenue lawsuit only highlights its own inconsistency.
“Shafie had previously dismissed the filing of the suit, yet when it was later withdrawn, Warisan portrayed the move as a betrayal of Sabahans. This contradictory stance reflects political opportunism rather than genuine concern for the people.”**
Dennison reminded political leaders to be cautious in their speeches and urged supporters not to aggravate the situation with remarks that could offend others.
“The demand by the Murut Christian community for Shafie to issue an open and unconditional apology is justified. Ignoring such a request will only prolong the controversy and risk widening the divide.
“The responsibility to ease tensions lies squarely on his shoulders. Failure to manage this matter wisely only reflects irresponsibility,” he added.
According to Dennison, the harmony of Sabah’s multiracial and multi-religious society must continue to be safeguarded through mutual respect.
“Do not divert attention from the real issue. What is most important now is to ensure that peace, harmony, and mutual respect between religions remain preserved,” he stressed.
