PENAMPANG: The Kaamatan celebration is not merely an annual cultural event; it also serves as a vital platform for showcasing local talent and boosting economic activity, said Billy Joe Dominic, UPKO Penampang Branch Youth Chief.
According to him, Kaamatan, which reaches its peak on 30 and 31 May at the Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA) centre, opens up vast opportunities for various parties, including singers, Unduk Ngadau participants, entrepreneurs, make-up artists, fashion designers, beauty salon operators, and event industry enthusiasts.
“Kaamatan is a platform for everyone to shine, regardless of background. It is not just a cultural festival, but also a stage for opportunities,” he said.
He noted that the celebration now enjoys recognition not only at state level, but also internationally, thereby delivering significant impact to local economic development.
He added that numerous local brands and products have gained recognition through participation in the event, including food stalls that attract visitors.
In addition, he highlighted the role of talented individuals such as make-up artists, emcees (MCs), event organisers, and sound system operators, who he said contribute greatly to the success of Kaamatan.
“Many local talents are of high calibre, but may simply lack the right exposure,” he said.
At the same time, he stressed that the economic impact from organising Kaamatan is substantial, as it creates business opportunities, generates income, and helps introduce local brands to a wider audience.
In this regard, he urged all parties to make the most of this platform to build their reputations and expand their businesses.
He also reminded the public to uphold good manners and a culture of respect throughout the celebration, while avoiding any unconstructive criticism of participants or judges.
“No one is perfect except God. Respect one another,” he said.
Meanwhile, he cautioned the public against drink-driving during the festive season.
“Don’t Drink and Drive !!” he emphasised.
