KENINGAU : The spirit of thanksgiving and cultural pride came alive at Kampung Gaulan as local residents gathered to celebrate the Kaamatan Festival, a traditional harvest celebration deeply rooted in the identity of Sabah’s indigenous communities.
State Assemblyman for Liawan, Datuk Annuar Ayub Aman, who attended the Mini Kaamatan organised at the Neighbourhood Watch (KRT) level, emphasised that the occasion represents more than a festive gathering. It stands as a powerful expression of unity, cultural identity, and communal values that continue to shape the social fabric of Sabah.
“This festival is far more than just entertainment,” he remarked. “Kaamatan is a reflection of our ancestral roots, the spirit of mutual cooperation, and the enduring harmony among our diverse ethnic communities. From the rhythmic beating of the gong to the graceful movements of the Sumazau dance, every element of the celebration speaks to a unique heritage we must strive to preserve.”

Set against a warm and lively backdrop, the event featured a range of traditional activities, including cultural performances, an ethnic attire competition, and a shared feast showcasing traditional Kadazan Dusun Murut (KDM) cuisine. These activities served not only to entertain, but also to reinforce the community’s commitment to passing on time-honoured customs to future generations.
Annuar expressed his gratitude to the organising committee and the village youth, commending their efforts in making this year’s Mini Kaamatan a successful and meaningful platform for community engagement and cultural continuity.
“This celebration is an inclusive space that welcomes people from all walks of life,” he added. “It is vital that we continue nurturing this culture, ensuring that our younger generation stays connected to their roots and understands the importance of our heritage.”
The event drew attendance from community leaders, cultural custodians, and visitors from surrounding areas, all united in celebrating the rich traditions of the KDM community.
As interest in local culture grows among the younger generation, events like these play a crucial role in ensuring that Kaamatan remains a living tradition, not only commemorating the rice harvest but also reinforcing a shared identity and legacy.
