KUALA LUMPUR: While the value of cars, homes, and investments is often carefully assessed, the real cost of absence is rarely recognised. Today, Volvo Car Malaysia introduces the Selamat Calculator, an interactive reflection tool developed in partnership with Mr Money TV, designed to emphasise the weight of one’s absence and everything it entails.

As part of its lifelong commitment to safety, Volvo continues its Selamat mission to empower and educate Malaysian drivers to make more conscious choices by quantifying what is truly at stake – and reinforcing the importance of protection when things go wrong.

The Selamat Calculator transforms an unimaginable scenario into a tangible reflection. It poses the difficult question: What if you never say, or hear, another “Selamat” again?

Through a series of questions covering age, career, income, dependants, lifestyle, and personal stakes, the experience creates a safety risk profile and estimates the financial and emotional impact left behind – from transferred burdens and interrupted plans to unrealised futures.

Participants are categorised into one of four life-stage profiles: the family’s pillar, the co-pilot in a partnership, the independent individual with a future ahead, and the dedicated breadwinner who has worked tirelessly to build their life. More importantly, the self-assessment serves as a reminder that the consequences of inattention, complacency, and inaction are not only measured in a split second but also in the moments missed, unfinished dreams, and the people we stand to lose if we don’t make it home.

Patricia Yaw, Sales & Marketing Director of Volvo Car Malaysia, said: “Nothing is worth more than your life, yet there are times we forget and take our safety for granted – after all, drivers are human. The Selamat Calculator isn’t about putting a price on life but acts as a gentle reminder to value our presence and recognise what could be lost in our absence. The true worth of our Selamat isn’t measured in wealth but in the people close to us and the achievements we cherish.”

Peter Yong, CEO and Co-Founder of Mr Money TV, stated: “Ultimately, financial literacy is about more than managing numbers; it’s about how we value our most precious resource – our lives. We often prioritise luxuries while overlooking the silent ‘investments’ that keep us safe enough to enjoy them. The Selamat Calculator is a wake-up call, encouraging reflection on what truly matters and reminding us that the most important choices aren’t always financial but simple: buckling your seatbelt, getting enough rest, or exercising patience on the road. Safety is a shared responsibility. When we choose to stay safe, we’re protecting not only ourselves but everyone else on the road.”

The Selamat Calculator is part of several educational initiatives by Volvo Car Malaysia aimed at reinforcing road safety fundamentals. Alongside the flagship Selamat Driving Experience scheduled for 16–17 May 2026, it forms part of the ‘Selamat’ campaign, which seeks to turn road safety from a regulatory obligation into a shared culture of responsibility.

“Selamat is in Volvo’s DNA and in every Malaysian’s spirit. With each ‘Selamat’ we say, there’s a quiet wish for our loved ones to arrive, live, and return safely. Volvo shares this hope – that those around us are protected wherever they go, so they can cherish the moments that matter most. We want to be part of the most important moment: the journey home,” added Yaw.
