KOTA KINABALU: Kapayan State Assemblywoman Datuk Jannie Lasimbang has made an urgent appeal to Ministers and government agencies for food supplies and bottled drinking water to assist flood victims in Penampang.
She said the appeal followed discussions with Noemi Johntren, Deputy President of the Penampang District Council, amid worsening flood and landslide situations in the district.
“Since Monday, 8 September, continuous heavy rainfall has caused repeated flooding and landslides. Many homes have been inundated up to three times in just one week, and with the rain still ongoing, further flooding is expected,” she said in a statement on Friday.
According to Jannie, the Penampang District Disaster Committee (JKBD) has activated four of the 21 gazetted Temporary Relief Centres. So far, 25 villages have been affected by flooding, while nine others have reported landslides.
“The situation has become extremely difficult for residents as food and clean water supplies are running low. I am working to mobilise immediate assistance for displaced families who are facing hardship,” she added.
She called on members of the public, NGOs, the private sector and government agencies to channel their contributions to Dewan Tokou, IPD Penampang.
Jannie also expressed gratitude for the concern, prayers and support shown by Malaysians during this challenging time.
She said her Kapayan Flood Response Team was currently on the ground providing assistance. “Thankfully, Kapayan itself has not been severely affected for now,” she noted.
