KePKAS Minister to be Conferred AFEO Honorary Fellowship

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Seri Christina Liew, will be awarded the prestigious Honorary Fellowship of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (AFEO) in the Philippines next month.

The announcement was made on Wednesday during a courtesy call by a delegation from The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM), Sabah Branch, led by its Chairman, Datuk Ir. Ts. Mohd Yaakob Jaafar.

The group also comprised Vice-Chairman I Ir. Ts. Tan Kok Jih, Vice-Chairman II Ir. Paul Yap, Immediate Past Chairman Datuk Ir. Willy Chin, Committee Member Ir. Wah Kheng Haw, Chairman of the Young Engineers Section (YES) Sabah Lee Tze Yei, Immediate Past Chairman of YES Sabah Ag Khairul Akmal Kamaludin, and Secretariat Officer Wendy Wong.

Mohd Yaakob said Liew’s nomination for the honour was submitted by IEM after receiving the recommendation from its Sabah Branch, and was subsequently endorsed by the AFEO Governing Board during its mid-term meeting in Vietnam.

He explained that the AFEO Honorary Fellowship, which carries the post-nominal Hon. FAFEO, is reserved for individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the engineering profession, the Institution, or the nation.

“Datuk Seri Christina has been a strong supporter of IEM Sabah, especially in facilitating the successful hosting of the 42nd Conference of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (CAFEO42) in Kota Kinabalu last October,” he said.

Immediate Past Chairman Ir. Chin served as Organising Chairman of CAFEO42.

“The Minister’s support was instrumental in the event’s success, strengthening regional engineering collaboration while also highlighting Sabah’s cultural heritage and commitment to sustainable tourism. Her recognition as AFEO Honorary Fellow is a source of pride for Sabah and Malaysia,” he added.

The conferment ceremony will be held on 30 October during the 43rd AFEO Conference (CAFEO43) at the SMX Convention Center in Clark, Philippines.
