KOTA KINABALU : The Kinabalu Running Club donated RM 5,000 to Kiulu Constituency Service Centre to support the community in their recovery from the recent Kiulu-Tamparuli flood caused by heavy rains at the onset of July 2024.

This contribution was made possible through the proceeds of the Borneo Marathon, a successful event organised by the club in May 2024.

The Borneo Marathon attracted enthusiastic runners from the region and showcased the values of community and resilience.

Following the recent natural disaster, the Kinabalu Running Club has chosen to allocate a portion of the event's earnings to aid in relief efforts, ensuring that the funds directly benefit those impacted by the floods.

"The Borneo Marathon has always been more than just a race; it’s about bringing people together and making a positive impact," said Datuk Dr. Heng Aik Cheng, President of the Kinabalu Running Club.

"In the wake of the Kiulu-Tamparuli flood, it was imperative for us to step up and support our neighbours in Kiulu. This is the first time that the Kinabalu Running Club has supported such cause, meanwhile we have been contributing to other NGO and organisations in need annually", he stated.

The RM5,000 donation will be used by the Service Centre to provide essential supplies, rebuild infrastructure, and support families who have been displaced or severely affected by the floods.

The recent heavy rains led to significant damage in the Kiulu and Tamparuli areas, with homes, roads, and public facilities impacted, making community support critical.

Spokesman of the Service Centre Aliamis Sami expressed their gratitude for the timely donation.

"This contribution from the Kinabalu Running Club is boon to our community," he said.

"The flood has been a challenging ordeal, but the solidarity and support from organisations like the Kinabalu Running Club provide much-needed relief and encouragement to the whole community."

The Kinabalu Running Club remains committed to using its platform to support local charitable causes, communities and promote health and fitness through events like the Borneo Marathon.

As they look forward to future events, the club encourages more participation and support in Kota Kinabalu and the surrounding regions to continue making meaningful contributions to local charitable causes.
