KK Development Projects Prioritised in Prime Minister’s Meeting; Deputy Minister Supports Call for Greater Efficiency

KOTA KINABALU: The Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security and Kota Kinabalu MP, Datuk Chan Foong Hin, expressed strong support for the Prime Minister’s call for increased efficiency in the implementation of development projects during a district development meeting yesterday.

The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, reviewed ongoing key initiatives and addressed urgent issues affecting the Kota Kinabalu district. It provided a platform for direct updates from Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) and other relevant agencies regarding the city’s development priorities, infrastructure needs, and community welfare.

In his speech, the Prime Minister emphasised that delays caused by inefficiency or bureaucratic hurdles must be avoided, highlighting that such setbacks could negatively impact residents’ quality of life and hinder the city’s growth potential.

Supporting this stance, Chan reaffirmed his backing for the Prime Minister’s call for greater accountability and urgency in project execution.

He also acknowledged the government’s commitment to resolving issues at the district level through improved coordination between federal ministries, the Sabah state government, and local authorities.

Kota Kinabalu, as Sabah’s capital and a crucial hub for economic activity and tourism in East Malaysia, continues to experience rapid development. The Deputy Minister stressed the importance of infrastructure development and urban planning keeping pace with this growth to ensure sustainable living standards for residents.

Among the key projects discussed was the BAS.MY Kota Kinabalu programme, which aims to introduce 48 buses across eight routes. Scheduled for full deployment by June, the scheme is projected to benefit between 50,000 and 150,000 daily commuters. With an estimated investment of RM88 million over five years, the initiative is expected to enhance public transport connectivity, ease traffic congestion, and improve mobility within the city.

Additionally, efforts to revitalise Kota Kinabalu’s public spaces were highlighted. These include the completion of upgrades to the Atkinson Clock Tower area in September 2025, which involved an allocation of nearly RM12 million for improved pedestrian walkways and landscaping. Other projects include upgrades to Taman Awam Teluk Likas and the Tun Fuad Stephens Botanical Garden, as well as the development of a 4.3-kilometre coastal jogging and cycling path aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles and boosting eco-tourism.

Datuk Chan Foong Hin also thanked the Prime Minister, Minister of Transport Saudara Anthony Loke, and Minister of Housing and Local Government Nga Kor Ming for their leadership in advancing Kota Kinabalu’s development initiatives.

As the Member of Parliament for the city, he reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with all stakeholders to ensure the city’s growth remains inclusive, sustainable, and responsive to the needs of its residents.

Kota Kinabalu’s potential remains considerable, and with continued cooperation between federal and state authorities, officials believe the city can develop into a vibrant, liveable, and forward-looking capital for Sabah.
