KOTA KINABALU: A new direct flight from Incheon, South Korea to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah has been launched by T'way Air, a Korean low-cost airline on Monday.
The inaugural flight, which carried 188 passengers, marked a milestone for the airline and the state, as they seek to boost tourism and economic ties.
The passengers were warmly welcomed by Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, who is also Sabah Tourism Board (STB) Chairman, at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport.
Joniston said the direct flight would enhance international connectivity to Sabah and benefit various sectors.
"Having more international direct flights creates a vital balance that not only benefits our tourism industry but also fuels economic growth in Sabah.
“By enhancing connectivity, we are opening doors for more visitors to experience the natural wonders and cultural heritage that Sabah offers while simultaneously generating employment opportunities and driving sustainable development," he said.
South Korea is one of the top sources of international visitors to Sabah, with 68,685 arrivals recorded between January and April this year. Sabah's islands, beaches, golf courses, diving sites and birdwatching spots are popular among Korean tourists.
T'way Air Kota Kinabalu Station Regional Manager Kim Minkeun said the airline was excited to connect travellers to Sabah and showcase its attractions.
"Sabah has long been known for its captivating natural wonders, cultural heritage, and warm hospitality. As T'way Air spreads its wings to this remarkable destination, we aim to bring travellers closer to the magic of Sabah, creating memories that will last a lifetime," he said.
Sabah is currently connected to 10 international cities, namely Singapore, Bandar Seri Begawan, Taipei, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Incheon, Busan, and Manila. More direct flights are expected to commence in the coming months from Shanghai, Beijing and Macau.
