SANDAKAN: The official launch of the KDCA Women’s Council Sandakan took place recently at Sabah Hotel Sandakan, marking a significant milestone in the empowerment of women within the Kadazan Dusun Murut Rungus (KDMR) community. The ceremony was officiated by Liau Fui Fui, Chairperson of Jetama Water Sdn Bhd, who also attended as the Guest of Honour.

The event was graced by Datuk Tindarama Joanna Datuk Kitingan, Chairperson of the KDCA Women’s Council Central Committee, alongside KDCA leaders from state and district levels, representatives from non-governmental organisations (NGOs), community leaders, and more than 300 invited guests.

Highlights of the ceremony included the singing of the national and state anthems, a traditional welcoming dance, official speeches, presentation of certificates to workshop participants, the appointment of the KDCA Women’s Council Sandakan Committee for 2025–2028, and the presentation of souvenirs to the guest of honour.

In her officiating address, Puan Liau Fui Fui expressed appreciation to all parties involved in realising the establishment of the KDCA Women’s Council Sandakan, describing it as an important initiative to empower local women and strengthen the cultural heritage and identity of the KDMR community.

“I believe that with the establishment of the KDCA Women’s Council Sandakan, we can work together to empower women as custodians of culture while also playing a key role in local social and economic development,” she said.

As a gesture of support towards enhancing the role of women and promoting KDMR culture, Puan Liau Fui Fui contributed RM10,000 to the KDCA Women’s Council Sandakan to assist in the implementation of future cultural and community programmes.

She also emphasised the importance of continuous efforts to preserve the authenticity of KDMR traditions and identity, urging all parties to collaborate in expanding cultural programmes that would engage the younger generation and attract visitors.

In conjunction with the launch, a Technical Workshop on Judging, Grooming, and Traditional Costume for the Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan Pageant was held earlier the same day, involving more than 40 women participants. The workshop aimed to enhance members’ traditional knowledge and skills within the KDCA Women’s Council Sandakan.

The event concluded with a dinner, photo session, and a lively finale dance themed “Senyuman Sabahan” (The Sabahan Smile).
