LOCAL MAN ARRESTED FOR POSSESSING TWO BAKAKUK

RANAU: Ranau police have arrested a local man in his 30s and seized two bakakuk (makeshift shotguns) in a raid on an unnumbered house in Kampung Narambai, here.

Ranau District Police Chief DSP Sammy Newton said the arrest was made by a team of officers and policemen from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Ranau Police Headquarters during Op Laras at 5.20pm, recently.

"The case is being investigated under Section 8 (a) of the Weapons Act 1960 (Act 206). If convicted, one can be sentenced to imprisonment not exceeding seven years or a fine not exceeding RM10,000, or both," he said in a statement today.

Sammy asserted that the police did not compromise with any party involved in the case.

"The police are serious about the ownership and use of homemade firearms as well as the use of firearms without a valid license in this district," he added.

According to him, such operations will be continued in the future to ensure there are no violations of the law regarding firearms.

He also advised the public to always abide by the law regarding the ownership and use of firearms to avoid stern action.
