KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia is refocusing its tourism strategy towards high-growth and stable markets as global conditions evolve, according to Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Tiong King Sing.

In a statement, the minister said the government would prioritise key regional markets across ASEAN and Asia, including China, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, India, Bangladesh and Vietnam.

"At the same time, Malaysia will continue engaging with emerging and long-haul markets such as Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Russia, France, Germany, Australia, Timor-Leste, Ukraine, Denmark, Switzerland, Türkiye and Poland to ensure diversification and long-term resilience, "he said.

The ministry is closely monitoring airfare trends, flight frequencies and overall air connectivity, he said, adding that Tourism Malaysia has been instructed to provide daily reports on international arrivals and market movements to support timely, data-driven decision-making.

Officers, including those stationed overseas, have also been directed to supply real-time updates, market insights and strategic recommendations to enable swift responses to changing global conditions.

According to him the government is also shifting its focus towards higher-value tourism segments, with an emphasis on premium travel.

The strategy aims to improve quality, yield and overall economic contribution rather than relying solely on visitor numbers.

He said, Malaysia will continue to strengthen its position as a global leader in Muslim-friendly tourism, enhancing its halal ecosystem and hospitality standards while positioning the country as a preferred destination for Muslim travellers worldwide.

The ministry said it remains in close engagement with industry stakeholders to address operational challenges, including rising costs linked to fuel and diesel. Industry players have been urged to provide detailed data and feedback, particularly on cost structures, to support more effective policy responses.

Reaffirming Malaysia’s status as a safe, stable and welcoming destination, the Minister also called on all parties to act responsibly and avoid spreading misinformation or unfounded claims that could undermine public confidence.

He stressed that current challenges stem from unprecedented global disruptions driven by ongoing geopolitical conflicts, warning against simplistic comparisons with past economic conditions.

The government, under the leadership of the prime minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim remains committed to safeguarding national interests and ensuring economic stability. It added that speculation or politically motivated narratives must not be allowed to disrupt confidence in the economy.

Malaysia will continue to take a proactive and coordinated approach, with the priority of reinforcing resilience, maintaining stability and sustaining growth in the tourism sector and the wider economy, the minister said.
