LEBANON: The Gawai and Kaamatan celebrations, two significant cultural festivals celebrated by Malaysians from Sabah and Sarawak, were showcased by MALBATT 850-12 in Lebanon.

The celebration was held at the Dewan Pahlawan, UNP 6-43, Tibnin Camp, highlighting festivals that are rich in cultural values and embody a spirit of gratitude.

The event also served as a platform for cultural diplomacy, aimed at showcasing Malaysia’s rich heritage to the international community under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mission.

The event was attended by the Commander of the Western Sector, Brigadier General Nicola Mandolesi, Battalion Commanders, contingent members under the Western Sector of UNIFIL, as well as UNIFIL Headquarters staff.

Various performances reflecting the cultural essence of Gawai and Kaamatan were presented in a lively and colourful atmosphere.

Among the highlights were traditional dances such as the Ngajat and Alu-Alu from Sarawak, and the Sumazau dance from Sabah.

Guests were also treated to special dishes from the Dayak and Kadazandusun communities and witnessed the Potong Ranyai ceremony, a symbol of gratitude and prosperity during the harvest season.

The Commander of MALBATT 850-12, Colonel Johan Effendi bin Mohd Shalleh, also presented special mementoes in the form of the Parang Ilang sword and Terabai shield to the honoured guests.

These two cultural symbols of the Dayak people represent rich heritage, courage, and honour.

The celebration reflected the spirit of Malaysia and the unity that forms the foundation of the nation's identity. It demonstrated that, despite the diversity of ethnicities and cultures, Malaysians remain united in harmony and mutual respect.

This celebration not only strengthened ties among the various contingents under the Western Sector but also reinforced the spirit of unity and understanding among peacekeepers serving together in Lebanon.
