KOTA KINABALU: Strategic partnerships are important in driving Sabah’s economic growth, the Minister of Industry, Entrepreneurship and Transport (MINDET), Datuk Ewon Benedick said.

He said this about the collaboration between Sabah Oil & Gas Development Corporation (SOGDC) and SEDCO Mining Sdn Bhd, which was formalised through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, tonight.

“The collaboration between SOGDC and SEDCO Mining Sdn Bhd is very significant because both entities are under the supervision of the Ministry of Industry Development, Entrepreneurship and Transport (MINDET),” he said.

“These positions will enable the two organisations to benefit from institutional synergy, policy coordination, and the strategic and integrated implementation of development projects.”

Ewon added that when state development agencies operate within the same ecosystem and share aligned development goals, project planning and execution can be more efficient, swift, and effective.

“This collaboration will also enable the State Government to optimise resource utilisation, accelerate strategic infrastructure development, and increase investor confidence in Sabah’s investment ecosystem,” he said.

He expressed optimism that this partnership would open opportunities for development within the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park (SOGIP) and the Sawit Kinabalu Sandakan Industrial Park (SKSIP), both of which are key industrial hubs in Sabah.

“These initiatives are important in supporting Sabah’s ambition to strengthen its position as a regional industrial and trading centre,” he said.

The Minister also highlighted that the collaboration would boost infrastructure capacity, attract more investment, and generate economic benefits for surrounding areas.

“This will create more opportunities for employment and industrial growth, ultimately improving the livelihoods of the people of Sabah,” he stated.

Ewon reaffirmed that Sabah’s natural resources are abundant and diverse, but stressed that their real benefits can only be realised through clear strategic planning, quality investments, and transparent governance.

“Our aim is to develop these resources in a way that creates a complete industrial value chain, not just exploiting the resources but also supporting industries, new business opportunities, and jobs,” he said.

He concluded by expressing his confidence that these strategic collaborations will help Sabah progress towards a more prosperous, competitive, and sustainable future.

The MoU cosigners were Chief Executive Officer Mohd Azmir Ramli for SOGDC and Chief Executive Officer Shamsul Bahri Johari for SEDCO Mining.
