SANDAKAN: Councillors from the Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) recently paid a courtesy visit to the newly appointed District Engineer of the Jabatan Air Sandakan, Ts. Nelly Juee Philip, to address pressing water supply issues affecting residents in Sandakan.

Among those present were councillors Shamsul Kelana, Kelvin Liew Kian Vun, Choong Kwek Leong, Safarudin Abu, Nerisaa Berredo @ Aisah, Lai Shiau Lin and Kent Chin.

Councillor Choong emphasised that the engagement reflects a proactive approach by MPS representatives to liaise directly with relevant agencies, rather than relying on indirect communication channels.

“As representatives of the people, councillors are not only responsible for policymaking but must also respond effectively to public complaints and issues on the ground,” he said.

He added that, moving forward, councillors will adopt a more coordinated and team-based approach when engaging with government agencies.

This, he noted, would ensure wider coverage of issues across Sandakan and enable more effective problem-solving.

During the session, several key matters were raised, including the Bandar Prima entrance repair works scheduled to commence on 13 April, which are expected to significantly affect water supply across Sandakan.

Other concerns included ongoing water disruptions in village areas, the progress of current infrastructure projects, and the need for long-term solutions to recurring water supply issues.

Nelly provided a comprehensive briefing on the current situation, mitigation measures being undertaken, and future plans.

She also expressed appreciation for the councillors’ initiative in strengthening collaboration and offering constructive feedback.

Choong reiterated that MPS councillors remain committed to enhancing coordination with government agencies, improving the management of public complaints, and bridging communication between authorities and the community.

He stressed that continuous engagement and strong working relationships between MPS and relevant agencies are essential to ensuring better service delivery and improving the quality of life for the people of Sandakan.
