KOTA KINABALU: The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry, Datuk Jamawi Jaafar, has welcomed the appointment of the new Permanent Secretary (SUT) of the ministry, Datuk Jumain Abdul Ghani, who reported for duty at his office today.

Jamawi expressed his confidence that anyone appointed and selected is capable of carrying out their responsibilities effectively, provided they receive full cooperation, support, and unwavering backing from all staff within the ministry.

He also reminded all departments and agencies under the ministry to give their full commitment to the new SUT to ensure smooth administration and implementation of policies.

According to him, the ministry manages four departments and five agencies, which requires high levels of coordination and teamwork.

Jamawi emphasised the importance of leadership (Heads of Department) being active in the field and dedicating time on the ground, as many issues can be identified and resolved directly through personal observation.

“Being in the field allows us to resolve more matters based on actual conditions,” he said.

Jumain, 53, officially replaces Datuk Leonard Stephen Poyong, who will serve in the Sabah State Economic Planning Unit (UPEN).

He has extensive experience in public service, having previously served as District Officer in Tambunan and Ranau, as well as Assistant District Officer in Telupid.

Prior to his recent appointment, Jumain held the position of Director of the Department of Islamic Religious Affairs of Sabah (JHEAINS).

Earlier, he attended a brief briefing on the ministry delivered by Deputy Permanent Secretary I (Plantation and Infrastructure), Awang Dzulkernain Awang Hassan, together with relevant department heads.

Meanwhile, Jumain expressed his gratitude to the Chief Minister for the trust placed in him to hold this position.

“I thank the Chief Minister for this appointment. I am aware that this responsibility is significant and the mandate heavy. Being appointed as the SUT of MAFFI is very close to my heart,” he said.

He also committed to working hard to realise the ministry’s mission and vision.

“It’s not easy, but nothing is impossible,” he added.

Subsequently, Jamawi and Jumain held a brief meeting with Leonard at his office.
