PENAMPANG: United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO) Youth chief Billy Joe Dominic has reiterated his long-standing call for the Penampang Municipal Council to review its proposed parking fees, saying he raised the issue as early as 2024 but his requests were ignored.

Billy said he had previously urged the council to reassess the parking rates and to make the concession agreement with the private operator public for transparency.

“With the new charges that started on 1 April, the concerns remain the same,” he said.

The rate is RM1.50 per hour for yellow zones.

Billy, who attended a briefing on the matter with Penampang Member of Parliament Datuk Ewon Benedick, said the agreement with the concessionaire was signed before Ewon became an MP

.

“Datuk Ewon did not agree with the rates and asked the council to review them,” he said.

Billy, an UPKO Candidate for Kapayan seat, said the fees burdened residents, small traders and hawkers, especially as Penampang lacks a proper public transport system.

“People here rely on their cars every day. These charges hit them hard,” he said.

“If elected by the people of Kapayan on 29 November 2025, I will fight to ensure the parking fees are fair and reasonable,” he added.
