KUALA LUMPUR: The Perhentian Islands have emerged as Malaysia’s fastest-growing destination for international travellers, according to digital travel platform Agoda’s latest New Horizons ranking. The platform also identified Sitiawan as the top trending domestic destination, while Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam is gaining popularity among Malaysian travellers.

Agoda’s annual New Horizons ranking compares accommodation booking data from the previous two years to identify destinations with the strongest growth in international travel across Asia.

Fabian Teja, Country Director for Malaysia and Brunei at Agoda, said travellers are increasingly looking beyond traditional hotspots.

“Destinations such as the Perhentian Islands, Sitiawan and Phu Quoc reflect a growing appetite for authentic, nature-led and culturally rich experiences. At Agoda, we are excited to help travellers discover these rising destinations by offering great value across accommodation, flights and activities on one easy-to-use platform,” he said.

The Perhentian Islands climbed to 14th place in 2025 from 16th in 2024, highlighting their growing appeal among international visitors. Renowned for crystal-clear waters and vibrant marine life, the islands offer excellent snorkelling and diving, while their tranquil beaches and lush jungles provide an ideal retreat for nature lovers.

Sitiawan emerged as the top domestic destination, rising to 43rd place in 2025 from 48th in 2024, signalling increased interest among local travellers. The town is well known for its seafood and cultural heritage, with traditional temples and a welcoming local community.

For Malaysians travelling abroad, Phu Quoc Island recorded a significant jump, climbing to 21st place in 2025 from 34th in 2024. The island is popular for its pristine beaches, luxury resorts, vibrant night markets and fresh seafood.

Across Asia, Sapa in Vietnam topped Agoda’s list of emerging destinations, followed by Okayama (Japan), Bandung (Indonesia), Matsuyama (Japan) and Takamatsu (Japan), reflecting strong growth in international travel interest.

Travellers planning their 2026 holidays can explore Agoda’s deals on more than six million accommodation options, over 130,000 flight routes, and more than 300,000 activities and experiences available on the platform.
